Head of Investment Banking

This is a permanent, full-time position based in ClearlySo’s London office.

ClearlySo is Europe’s leading impact investment bank. We work exclusively with entrepreneurs and funds delivering attractive financial returns as well as positive social and/or environmental impact, providing them with corporate finance advice and assisting them in raising investment capital.

ClearlySo has advised 100+ clients raising well over £100m of investment, from a broad network of individual and institutional investors, to help them scale their business. The past year has seen significant milestones including Octopus Ventures becoming our largest institutional investor, moving into upgraded office premises, a surge in impact fund mandates, and being named ‘Business Consultancy of the Year’ at the British Small Business Awards.

The Role

This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious senior investment professional to take on a new challenge, growing Europe’s leading impact investment bank from a strong platform.

The new Head of Investment Banking will manage ClearlySo’s investment banking division, actively leading deals and providing guidance to the team on others. We expect the candidate to source and work with some of the leading impactful businesses, charities and funds in the UK (and increasingly Europe).  They will continually improve the quality of service we provide to our clients, deepen relationships with our network of investors, and advise on and develop innovative investment structures that enable our clients to increase both their financial success and their positive impact.  The candidate will work closely with the CEO and the rest of the senior leadership team to define ClearlySo’s strategy, building on our success to date, and they will develop our talented investment banking team.

Key Activities

Oversee all activities of the investment banking division, ensuring the execution of quality capital-raising and advisory services to a wide range of clients

As Deal Lead on specific mandates, manage the deal process from origination stage, through due diligence, advisory, negotiation & execution

Proactively build a strong pipeline of new clients and opportunities

Coach & develop ClearlySo’s talented and dedicated investment banking team, including those involved in deal execution as well as sales and distribution

Lead preparation and delivery of the investment banking division’s budget and targets

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute significantly to ClearlySo’s overall strategy and business development

Must-haves:

Significant experience in leadership roles in investment banking, corporate finance, or private equity

A strong track record of structuring and executing successful transactions

Enthusiasm for working in a small, entrepreneurial company

Outstanding leadership qualities with previous team management experience

A demonstrated ability to source new clients and build strong relationships

A commitment to a better financial system, where the impact of investments is considered alongside risk and return

Nice-to-haves:

Strong skill set in debt-related structures or in structured finance

Deep experience in an additional area in which ClearlySo sees potential growth (e. g. fund advisory)

Experience in working with SMEs

Experience within impact investing; knowledge of current trends and regulations, and existing relationships with key players

Senior Finance Manager

This is a permanent, full-time position based in ClearlySo’s London office.

The Role

The Senior Finance Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Finance function, for improving ClearlySo’s capacity for financial tracking and planning, and for providing strategic financial support to the senior management team.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Senior Finance Manager will take full ownership of ClearlySo’s accounting and financial systems, ensuring that they meet the required standards internally and with our stakeholders, as an FCA-regulated organization.

In addition, the Senior Finance Manager will play an important role in the growth and development of ClearlySo’s strategy.  They will work closely with the senior management team to develop budgets, manage financial performance, and provide analysis and insight on strategic decisions.

We are looking for someone who will thrive in a fast-growing, values-driven company, who likes to get things done, and will seek to continually improve ClearlySo’s financial management as it grows.

 

Key Activities

Manage day-to-day running of the Finance function:

Full ownership of ClearlySo’s financial accounting systems

Manage the completion of comprehensive monthly and annual management accounts and report on the financial position of the business, including consolidation of financial statements

Manage payroll, expenses and over overhead allocations

Administer company pension scheme and employee share scheme

Manage accounts payable

Raise invoices to clients and manage credit control

Submit quarterly VAT returns

 

Provide and interpret financial information:

Provide timely and accurate financial reports to the Board

Manage statutory accounts preparation and be the main point of call for auditors

Assist with reporting to ClearlySo’s investors

Develop external relationships with appropriate contacts including auditors, solicitors, HMRC, and statutory organisations

 

Support longer-term financial planning and analysis:

Develop and update budgets, and liaise with the senior management team around performance against budget

Model future scenarios to assess strategic business decisions

Complete ad-hoc commercial analysis

Continue to improve our financial management processes and controls, to meet compliance requirements and minimize financial risk

 

Must-haves:

Minimum 7 years experience within accountancy/finance based roles, including leadership positions

CIMA, ACCA or ACA qualified

Excellent numeracy and Excel skills

Good communication to non-finance professionals

Commercially astute

Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail

Ability to work independently; initiative to improve on current systems; must be a problem solver

 

Nice-to-haves:

Experience of Xero

Familiarity with FCA regulated companies

Experience in a financial intermediary, investment bank or corporate finance house

Familiarity with investment including debt & equity

Experience in an entrepreneurial environment, building a quality finance function within a small team

Experience running a finance function in an SME

Interest in ClearlySo’s mission of building a better financial system that supports positive social and environmental impact

Impact Services – General Application

We are always on the lookout for outstanding candidates to join ClearlySo’s Impact Services team.

ClearlySo’s Impact Services team are delivering a new set of tools and services to empower private investment firms to take action to increase the positive impact of their portfolios.

This is a challenging and innovative project, breaking new ground in incorporating impact into the investment decisions of private equity firms.

There are a number of exciting roles available within the team. We are seeking candidates who can bring a wealth of knowledge about existing ESG & impact measurement best practice, who know the private equity markets inside out, who have expert research and analytical skills and/or client service experience. The team is currently small, so there are lots of opportunities for growth for team members. All candidates should be analytical, commercially-minded, and enthusiastic about the opportunity to influence private equity investors to actively consider impact.

Impact Services - Senior ESG/Impact Analyst

This role is based in ClearlySo’s London office, and is open to full-time or part-time applicants.

The Role

We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic ESG/impact Analyst to join ClearlySo’s Impact Services team.

Your role will be to analyse and review our clients’ portfolio companies, using ClearlySo’s proprietary tools.  This forms the core part of our services to empower mainstream private equity investors to take action to understand and increase the positive impact of their portfolios. You will deliver analysis that meet our clients’ high expectations, whilst continually working with the Manager to evolve and improve the services we offer. This is a challenging and innovative project, breaking new ground by equipping private equity investors with the tools to assess and increase impact, in which you will play a key part.

 

Key activities:

Analyse companies using ClearlySo’s innovative research solution, summarising their ESG and impact performance, always seeking to produce the highest quality output;

Stay up to date with the best sources and macro themes in ESG and impact, and bring those insights to bear on the services we provide;

Help evolve the methodology and services ClearlySo offers;

Support the small but growing Impact Services team on broader business development projects;

Set  best practice, providing support and coaching where necessary;

Work closely and collaboratively with the team as it grows and evolves

 

Must-haves:

Experience as an ESG or Sustainable Investment Analyst;

Familiarity with relevant ESG information sources and research best practice;

Capacity to think critically and use initiative;

Detail-oriented, with a drive to always produce the highest-quality work for clients;

Interest in building a better financial system that supports positive social and environmental impact;

 

Additional strengths:

Experience working with institutional investors;

An understanding of the constraints, priorities and opportunities for venture capital and private equity firms;

Formal qualifications in financial and/or environmental and social analysis;

Relationships with research providers, Trade Unions and NGOs
