Epona sells a wide range of t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) made from Fairtrade certified cotton. How is it social?
Epona produces Fairtrade clothing which ensures that the people who produce the garments receive a fair wage. The company is committed to non-exploitation of those involved in the production process and regularly carries out social audits on their factories. This includes ensuring that work weeks do not exceed 48 hours, all overtime is voluntary and paid; and that the working environment is hygienic and safe. Epona’s tops have also been approved as organic, and are Oeko-tex credited as well as Azo and heavy metal free. This provides a safer and healthier workforce who can work under fair conditions.
What is its business model?
Epona is a business to business clothing company, producing blank t-shirts and hoodies from fair-trade, organic-in-conversion cotton that can be branded up with a company logo. Epona’s cotton comes from fair-trade cooperatives in India. In 2008, Epona bought around 100 tonnes of cotton, from a group of 500 farmers in the Andhra Pradesh region of India. The farmers are all converting their farms over to organic farming and do not use pesticides and insecticides on their land. The production of the clothing is closely monitored and is sweat-shop free.
Epona supplies around 80 universities in the UK, major charities such as UNICEF and Amnesty International, music merchandise and work wear for major corporations. Growth has been rapid over the last five years with sales growing from £10k in 2004 to over £850k in 2008. Epona believes that there are lots of opportunities to expand both in the UK and Internationally.

Pavegen designs paving slabs that generates electricity from the kinetic energy of people walking. The system has the potential to power pedestrian lighting, way-finding solutions, advertising and information panels as well as the potential ability to sell the energy to the national grid. It allows users to take part in the energy saving process themselves unlike other renewable sources. Only a small portion of the energy is used to light up the slab itself. Pavegen is a micro-generation product for use in urban environments to supplement and replace existing energy sources. It has minimal installation and maintenance requirements with no planning permission needed as well as being highly visual and engaging to users.
