What does it do?

The UK's largest renewable energy generator.

How is it social?

Because Infinis specialises in renewable energy generation, its social impact is integral to its commercial activities.  By capturing methane from covered landfills, Infinis reduces the amount of carbon emissions that enter the atmosphere directly while generating electricity from the gases emitted by organic matter decaying in landfill. It also measures the carbon footprint of running the business and seeks to reduce it as far as is practicable. Infinis creates financial and environmental value from waste materials that would otherwise decay and release GHG emissions directly into the atmosphere.

What is its business model?

Infinis produces 10% of the UK’s renewable energy, employing more than 250 people across over 80 sites. The company produces the majority of its electricity by capturing the natural gas emitted from numerous landfill sites throughout the UK. Infinis currently has licenses to operate wind farms at 6 sites, and is also looking into offshore wind opportunities and biomass energy generation.

Its history

In 2006, Infinis was established as an independent company when it de-merged from WRG (Waste Recycling Group).  In the years prior to the de-merger, WRG acquired multiple landfill and power generation assets from a number of smaller companies, which in 2006 were transferred over to Infinis as part of the de-merger. In 2007, Infinis acquired the right to biomass and wind power development projects from Scottish Resources Group, and also acquired Re-Gen biogas power generation.

In the same year Infinis won one of the British Safety Council’s International Safety Awards. In 2008, Infinis received the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Silver Occupational Health and Safety Award, and was recognised by the Sunday Times as one of the ”Best Green Companies” in the UK. Infinis has positioned itself to benefit from the widely forecasted growth of the alternative energy sector, secured by the government’s promise of moving UK renewable energy production from 5% to 20% of total electrical energy generation by 2020.
