What does it do?

Boutique Ethique is an ethical fashion start-up that aims to be a high-end fashion label, selling quality women's clothing.

How is it social?

Boutique Ethique aims to support UK and European manufacturers, creating a supply chain as close to home as possible. All products are expected to be designed using eco-textiles, biodegradable fastenings, and non-synthetic interlinings.

What is its business model?

The ethos behind the label is one of longevity, ethical production and use of sustainable materials. It aims to produce small collections of high quality women’s clothing as part of the ‘slow fashion’ movement, offering long-lasting, classic pieces that are constructed with traditional tailoring methods. It also uses sustainable fibres and keeps up to date with developments of new textiles produced for low environmental impact, such as the hemp fibre currently being grown in the UK and next generation shoddy. Supporting the collections are a range of peripheral products offered through an online shop. These are created in collaboration with hand weavers in this country. The products include UK-woven scarves using silk and organic wool and organic wool throws. There will also be hand-blocked fabrics for home furnishings created in the UK.

Its history

Linda Row founded Clothworks in 1997. The company believe it was the first entirely green clothing company in the UK. The ethos has always been to consider each process along the line of production, from sourcing fibres to sending out the goods, ensuring that the greenest solution is found. Linda, committed to both the ethical consumerism movement and fair trade, foresaw the shift in public opinion that began to reject the low quality, low prices, fast stock turnover approach to buying clothes. Traditional brands have relied on cheap labour sources to maintain market share and have shown a lack of responsibility towards their producers. This has created an out of sight, out of mind mentality in which has producers have been badly exploited.
