The Green Stationery Company is one of the UK's only dedicated Green Office supplies companies. How is it social?
The market for recycled and green business products is still embryonic in the UK. The demand for recycled materials to produce new products, is so slow that at the start of this year, the UK exported more recycled paper than it retained for domestic production. Unless we have a strong UK market for recycled products the value of recycled materials will drop, making the recycling process less economicaly viable. While there are other main stream companies beginning to take an interest in marketing 'green' products they are not ensuring their own businesses are environmentally neutral. As a result, the environmental gains of marketing 'green' goods are being cancelled out by the environmental impact of the businesses that are selling them.
What is its business model?
The Green Stationery Company offers a full commercial office stationery service to small and medium businesses. It manufactures and imports a unique range of recycled and environmental business products and has a nationwide mail order service to distribute its goods. The business is run as a pioneering green and ethical business with an emphasis on zero environmental impact and complete transparency on ethical and social issues affecting the business.
Green Stationery Company products are almost all recycled. The expansion of the use of recycled products in this market should increase the demand for recycled materials.
The company currently supplies over 1,000 SME's throughout the UK.
Its history
The business was incorporated in 1993 with the aim of stimulating the market for environmental business products. At that time there was little or no demand for businesses to engage in green purchasing. The business grew very slowly with most activity going into educating and informing businesses on environmental issues. There was also a complete lack of suitable green products available from manufacturers. In the last 3 years the company has seen significant sales growth as the market for 'green' business products has developed. Green Stationery Company has recently invested in the latest electronic supply and procurement systems and is now in a position to supply many more and larger businesses and increase its turnover rapidly.
