What does it do?

Produces an acetylated wood product called Accoya™ from sustainably sourced softwood.

How is it social?

Accoya™ is made from sustainably sourced wood, is non-toxic and, because it is stable, is easy to maintain, thereby saving environmental and financial costs.  Accsys Technologies’ patented process of converting softwoods into durable, non-toxic hardwoods decreases the use of hardwood trees for timber. In general, the processes used in the manufacture of Accoya™ ensure that less waste is produced and less energy consumed than in traditional manufacture of comparable materials.

What is its business model?

Accsys began production of its Accoya™ wood product for the first time in 2007 and is currently seeking large-scale contracts. Financial results to date reflect investment in marketing ongoing operating costs and licensing activities; the group expects to make a profit in the coming financial year. The Group’s strategy is focused on maximising the global use of Accoya™ across multiple applications.

In March 2007, the company announced a £22 million investment agreement with Celanese Corporation (a global producer of specialty and intermediate chemical products, with a strong commitment to sustainability practises), having already raised £9.5 million in investment from other sources.

Its history

Previously called Accsys Chemicals, the company has spent several years developing a new wood species; an acetylated softwood with performance properties that match or exceed those of hardwoods.  Potential uses for the wood range from structural applications (replacing traditional construction materials such as steel) to musical instruments.

In 2006 the company began construction of a production plant in Arnhem, Netherlands, which became operational in March 2007.  This permitted progression from a technology development business to a manufacturing concern.
