Regenersis manages the entire lifecycle of mobile phones and other high-value technology products. How is it social?
Regenersis provides a comprehensive reuse and recycling service for the mobile phone industry. The company has tapped into the growing pressures of meeting EU and UK Government targets on recycling and the fast consumption of electronic goods, which are difficult to recycle and often harmful and toxic when sent to landfill. The business has understood the key value of charities in providing a network of environmentally conscious consumers prepared to send their used mobile phones via post to the company for processing. Regenersis is certified with four key licences under WEEE (The Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive), which was introduced in January 2007 in the UK with the aim of addressing the environmental impact of electrical and electronic equipment. The company is also registered with EMAS for its environmental management system.
What is its business model?
Regenersis reuses, resells and recycles mobile phones, MP3/4 players, PDAs, laptops, notebooks, satellite navigation systems, set top boxes, monitors and screens. The company works for clients in both the business-to-business and business-to-consumer sectors. These include mobile operators, retailers, manufacturers, and charities. The company thus provides an ‘end-to-end’ service for the reuse and recycling of mobile phones and electronic accessories.
Regenersis currently processes on average over 300,000 handsets per month. Approximately 80% of the handsets are refurbished and sent to developing countries to be re-sold as affordable mobile telecommunications. Approximately 20% of the waste is not reusable and is sent for safe recycling.
Its history
Regenersis (formerly Fonebak Plc) was launched in March 2008. The new brand represents a coming together of CRC, Fonebak and Intec under a common name. In 1979 Gordon Shields founded SEG, to provide solutions to the environmental issues facing corporate clients. In 2001 SEG created the company’s Mobile Phones division, with footholds in several European countries, and in 2003 SEG acquired a majority stake in a Romanian mobile phone repair services company. Fonebak became a separate legal entity when SEG reorganised in 2004. Fonebak floated on AIM in March 2005 and has acquired several phone repair companies, including Intec Group and CRC Group.
