Our business model
In order to be sustainable ClearlySo generates revenue from a number of sources. Here's how we make our money.
Membership services
For an annual subscription of £200, social businesses and social enterprises can access dedicated training seminars, discounted events and special deals from our corporate partners. We also provide members with consultation and services such as copywriting and public relations. Non-members can purchase these services on an ad-hoc basis. We always try to give value for money as well as lots of free information on our web site so, even if money is tight, social businesses can benefit from ClearlySo in some way.
Social investment events
ClearlySo runs a number of events throughout the year aimed at bringing social entrepreneurs and investors together. There is usually a small admission charge. We also take a 3% fee from any capital invested in social businesses or enterprises at our investment events.
Corporate partnerships
For companies and other organisations looking to engage with social business and enterprise ClearlySo offers a number of services. We can provide research or information on the sector or help with other custom projects. We also raise money from offering sponsorship of the ClearlySo Social Business Conference and advertising space on our email newsletters.
Content sales
As experts in social enterprise and social investment we are often asked to supply copy for publications including the Telegraph, Guardian and Interactive Investor. We also provide writing services for social businesses producing anything from press releases to web content or articles.
Initial funding
In order to fund the startup phase in 2009/10 ClearlySo sold shares to around 12 individual investors and continues to do so. As of July 2011, roughly one quarter of the company is held by external investors, while the rest is held by founders and staff (directly and via share options). We believe that such funding is the best way to enable growth and maintain independence.
